Green Product Swaps

Green Product Swaps

Going green doesn’t have to be an all-in commitment! You can start in small steps swapping out a few key products for something a little eco-friendlier. And thankfully, it’s never been easier.

Here’s a quick list to help you save money while giving Mother Nature a little extra love.

Brew without waste by using reusable (or compostable) coffee filters or a French press (and compost the grounds).

Replace single-use plastic straws with steel or silicone reusable straws. Find some at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Shop bottle-less shampoo (and conditioner) brands like Bottle None and Lavami from (Side note: has an entire section dedicated to green and all-natural products.)

Swap plastic wrap for beeswax. Regular toothbrushes for bamboo ones. Disposable razors for safety razors.

Ditch the paper towels and napkins for cloth napkins, dishcloths and tea towels. Check out Hudson’s Bay home section has great finds in a variety of fun patterns or colours.

Exchange your usual feminine hygiene products for the DivaCup or Knix’s leak-proof undies – comfortable and totally washable.

“Never underestimate the power of vinegar, baking soda and dish soap! Not only is it safe for your home, your family and the environment, but it’s also very cost-effective. For the most part, heavy cleaners are completely unnecessary. And for those who like the ‘clean smell’ left after using some cleaning products, try oil diffusers instead.”
– Jen, General Manager, Rakuten Canada

Look for the Clean at Sephora stamp of approval when shopping for items without parabens, sulfates, phthalates, mineral oils, formaldehyde and more. Yuk!

Eco-friendly brands and stores like Camomile Beauty and The Body Shop. Camomile Beauty provides shoppers with ethical, environmentally friendly brands and The Body Shop is a certified B Corp. Meaning they adhere to the environmental standards. That’s definitely worth supporting!

Vitacost has a Natural Home section with products that are BPA-free, chemical-free, chlorine-free, gluten-free, non-GMO, organic, paraben-free, vegan, preservative-free and more. You get a squeaky-clean home without the residue that could potentially harm your family and pets.

Choose fair trade, USDA-Ecocert Canada foods whenever possible from companies with high environmental standards like Prana. Pro-tip: Look for the seals on their websites!
